ARCHIE ON TOUR!
THE KIRSHNER RECORDS YEARS
Hampton Jacobs presents
the Pop Culture Cantina History of
The Archies
Get ready for a history of The Archies that you've never heard before . . . something we specialize in here @ Pop Culture Cantina! In 1987, college students Archer St. Christopher "Archie" Andrews, Forsythe Jerome "Juggy" Jones and Reginald Whitney "Gino" Mantle III formed a Rock trio in Boston, MA. Originally known as The Juggz, they began to draw a following; after a few months, they changed their name to The Archies. In the Spring of 1988, Mary Elizabeth "Betty" Cooper and Veronica Yvette "Roni" Lodge joined the group. That same month, Roni's father arranged for them to begin recording for Kirshner Records. Under the supervision of manager and executive producer Don Kirshner, they quickly evolved into a solid Pop/Rock performing unit!
1988 PROMO FOR THE
"ARCHIE" CARTOON SERIES
Between 1988 and 1990, The Archies bagged a clutch of hit singles. These included "Bang-Shang-A-Lang", "Jingle Jangle", "Who's Your Baby?" and the legendary international chart-topper "Sugar, Sugar"! However, by 1991 their working relationship with Don Kirshner had deteriorated to the breaking point. They found his directives overbearing and demanded creative control over their recordings. When it wasn't forthcoming, the group bought out its management contract and decided to disband. The members pursued business interests, started families and (except for bass player Reggie) concentrated on non-musical careers. Guitarist Archie married up keyboard player Roni, and drummer Juggy wed percussionist Betty.
However, before any of that happened, Kirshner Records sent The Archies on two consecutive concert tours. They appeared in 37 cities and 31 states as well as Washington DC and Puerto Rico. Since 1987, the band had been making personal appearances on the East Coast and as far away as Germany; but these tours really introduced The Archies to America and established them as an act with nationwide appeal.

1990 TOUR BOOKLET
Prior to these tours, The Archies were a band with fairly limited appeal: A Punk Rock-oriented all-male trio that took occasional side trips into Reggae and Tejano music territory. Then Veronica joined the group, bringing with her a strong mainstream Pop sensibility. The addition of her friend Betty opened the door to Country and Western songs; and the music direction of Chuck Clayton (ably assisted by pianist Geraldine Grundy) completed the package with a Soul music sensibility that would be important to The Archies' future.
In 1989 and 1990, all of those influences were in the mix. Don Kirshner's so-called "New Wave" group served up a tasty music stew filled with diverse flavors! They also socked it to their mostly teenage audiences with a dynamic stage show. Anchored by Jughead's dazzling drum skills, the formidable stage presence of Betty, Veronica and Reggie and Archie's prowess on lead guitar, The Archies blazed a flaming trail across America! Their hit singles were on the radio and they also had their own Saturday-morning cartoon series; people attending the group's concerts were familiar with the songs but they didn't expect the dynamic way they had of presenting them live. For the price of a ticket (quite reasonable in those days), they also heard superb covers of some of the best Sixties Pop songs ever! The groundwork for a Rock 'n' Roll legend was being laid right before their eyes.
