ARCHIE'S SOUL SESSIONS

 A R C H I E
@ ATLANTIC RECORDS
the soul sessions
2027 - 2040

From 2002 to 2013, The Archies scored hit after hit on Archie Records, an indie label that two of their members owned and operated. In 2014, those members sold the label to notorious corporate raider Jason Blossom. Their bandmates didn't want to record for Jason and tried to sign with another company, but he sued them!  Lawsuits and countersuits will proliferate over the next fifteen years, during which time the band is prohibited from recording.  Before his wife murders him in the year 2029*, Jason Blossom will triumph in every legal dispute with The Archies but one: They will win the right to cut masters elsewhere.  In late February 2027, Archie, Betty, Veronica and Jughead fly to New York City and sign a contract with Atlantic Records. With Chuck Clayton and Kevin Keller replacing departed members Trevor Smith and Reggie "Gino" Mantle, The Archies will make some of the most important music of their entire career. The story of that music is told in Pop Culture Cantina's graphic novelette Ride, Ride, Baby. This is the official log of their Pop/Soul-oriented Atlantic recording sessions.

“Slow Motion” will be offered to Atlantic Records when the group signs their contract.  Featuring Veronica's lead vocals, it’s the preview single for a proposed album of Blondie covers; The Archies will have been nursing this concept off and on since 2003.  However, when Atlantic declines the single, the idea is abandoned for good. "You Can Cry On My Shoulder" will surface as part of a French dance medley in 2034; Betty sings lead. In the year 2050, "Slow Motion", "The Hardest Part" (with a guest lead vocal by Toni Topaz) and "You Can Cry On My Shoulder" will be included in a Mexican box set that collects all of The Archies' Atlantic sessions. Originally called The Habanera Rock Medley, The Rocking Horse Medley is the studio version of a 2021 live recording that's been widely bootlegged. It will see belated release on an EP in the year 2075.

Bruce Springsteen will obtain a private pressing of this live recording when Atlantic Records decides against releasing it. In mid-2027, an unreleased live set from the Archie Fan Club Records catalog will be offered to Atlantic, but it will also be shelved. The master for The Archies' ƉXITOS EN VIVO album will subsequently be lost in the tape archives of Abbey Road Studios! Recovered in the late 2070s, it will finally have an official release in the year 2083. JEFF + ELLIE LIVE! gets a belated stand-alone release in 2063.

ƉXITOS EN VIVO
A live-in-concert album for release

Unfortunately for The Archies, their RIDE, RIDE, BABY album will be released into a racially volatile and fraught atmosphere. Initially, this tribute to White Soul songwriter Bert Berns will be soundly denounced, and the group will be accused of so-called cultural appropriation.  Archies fans who stand on the Progressive side of the socio-political divide will shun the LP en masse! However, Atlantic Records will delay its release for a year, during which time Archie, Betty, Chuck, Jughead, Kevin and Veronica will make many high-profile public appearances. One of them will be an all-star 2028 TV special taped in Italy before a live audience.

These are demos for an aborted second Atlantic album, to have been titled HARD TO HANDLE. Betty is lead vocalist on “Since You’ve Been Gone.” Juggy does the honors on “Mustang Sally”, “Hard To Handle” and “Some Other Guy.” Chuck Clayton sings “Knock On Wood” and duets with guest guitarist Rod Mack on "Supernatural Thing." Veronica solos on "B-A-B-Y" and Roni, Betty and special guest Toni Topaz sing trio on “We Are Family.” There exists a D'Angelo Wong-produced master tape of “Some Other Guy” that was recorded in 2012 for DESTINATION LOVE, an unreleased Archie + Veronica duet album. “Mustang Sally” is an expanded version of the song excerpted in The Archies' Rocking Horse Medley. Also at these sessions, The Archies are captured on tape rehearsing various other songs of 1950s/60s vintage. That tape will later be enhanced by AI and orchestral overdubs and the contents will be marketed as two separate albums: BRILLiance (2055) and HITS OF THE FIFTIES (2127). Distribution of the former LP will be halted by threat of litigation!

The story of The Archies’ sojourn at Atlantic Records won’t be complete until the 2070s, when music archives of the late Kevin Keller yield a treasure trove of previously-unissued recordings. Ten will be of selections intended for release on HARD TO HANDLE. Three of those are duets with Kelly’s Blue-Eyed Soul partner Jughead; two feature Kelly’s lead vocals; another pair features Juggy solo; and three showcase Juggy’s wife Toni Topaz. The latter include a stellar studio recording of “A Natural Woman”, which Toni will have sung on The Archies’ farewell tour. Archivists will determine that these recordings date from the year 2040 and were meant for an aborted trio album; but when their existence is publicized, fans will be quick to draw the HARD TO HANDLE connection. While they will decline to take part, Archie and Veronica will have given their blessing to this Blue-Eyed Soul project; and before his death in 2073, Arch will sign off on marketing it as a reconstruction of his aborted Archies Soul album. That's accomplished by pairing the 2040 Kevin Keller productions with eight of the 2028 demos. The renamed ROCKING HORSE LP will be released to much fanfare in 2074! Additional rarities will appear on a 2075 ROCKING HORSE EP.

SEDAKA JUNCTION is a promotional record for a film of the same title, based on a hit Broadway musical.  However, none of these Archies tracks will be heard in the movie! Laura Pinto is contracted to produce the session with no co-producers; having joined the Archies with the proviso that he produce every track he records with them, Chuck Clayton sits out the date. Veronica does the same; she and Laura have a long-standing acrimonious relationship! Tejano duo Olguita + Reginald stands in for them; this act features former Archies member Reggie "Gino" Mantle. Archie sings lead on “Love Is

Spreading Over The World”. Blue-Eyed Soul performs duet vocals for “Turn On The Sunshine.” Olguita + Reginald perform a guest

vocal duet on “Your Heart’s Not In Your Love”. Former Archies member Trevor Santiago (aka Trevor Smith) makes an unexpected visit to the session; at Archie's insistence, he contributes guest lead vocals on “Sunny”. On June 27, the Nigella Federman Horns will be overdubbed in London at Metropolis Studios. SEDAKA JUNCTION will chart in the American Top Forty and be The Archies' sole domestic hit for Atlantic Records until the 2070s.

This two-record vinyl repackaging of the RIDE, RIDE, BABY album
features new backing tracks recorded by The New Archies; they
will be the successor group to The Archies. Lana Suzuki plays both
lead and rhythm guitars; Donna Dante is on bass; Mal Hypster plays
drums and percussion; Toby Maxx plays various brass instruments;
and Rikki Ninja is the keyboard player. The tracking sessions will take
place at Boston's Witch Queen Recording Studios in April and May of 2048. The re-recording happens because the album master is accidentally erased in the year 2047 and only the Memphis-recorded vocal tracks survive. Miraculously, The New Archies (under the direction of Bree Spellman) are able to duplicate them with near 100% accuracy! The substitution will not become public knowledge until decades after the fact. Every track listed in this log that's recorded prior to 2040 will be issued in the aforementioned eight-record box set. Called ALLƁ EN LA CAJA GRANDE, this 2050 Atlantic Records release will sell out its first pressing.

PROMO FOR THE THE 2083 ATLANTIC

RECORDS ALBUM ƉXITOS EN VIVO,

A LONG-LOST LIVE VERSION OF THE

ARCHIES' BEST'-SELLING ƉXITOS

EN ESPAƑOL LP FROM 2008.

*The date of Jason Blossom's death changed from 2027 to 2029 in the aftermath of a time-travel incident chronicled in Pop Culture Cantina's 2019 feature "The Freaking Out of Geraldine Grundy." There will be one more Atlantic Records studio session credited to The Archies, in September of 2033. Produced by Bree Spellman, it results in a soundtrack recording for the indie film Philadelphia Freedom. Only released in Europe, it features Archie Andrews, Betty Cooper and Kevin Keller performing together after The Archies have officially disbanded! The group name is used for contractual reasons. For documentation of those soundtrack sessions, see ARCHIE IN THE THIRTIES.

ATLANTIC RECORDS WILL PROMOTE AN ARETHA/SOUL MOTION EP BUT THIS VINYL RECORD WON'T BE RELEASED IN THE USA.

The Archies will think of their time at Atlantic Records as one of commercial failure but the opposite is true: Every release on Atlantic except the first pressing of RIDE, RIDE, BABY and the 2057 compilation album ARCHIE DOES ATLANTIC scores a smash hit in some part of the world. Not only will Atlantic release everything that The Archies recorded for them over a span of 50 years, the label will market a chart-topping LP not completed until seven years after the group disbands: 2074's ROCKING HORSE/THE ARCHIES IN SOUL MOTION! A small but adamant minority of Rock critics - as well as Archie himself - will insist that all the best Archies records were cut for Atlantic.
