In a storyline exclusive to this blog, Archie and Veronica Lodge-Andrews teamed with sound engineer Alan Mayberry to found an indie record label in the year 2000. Gangsta rapper Big Ethel was their first signing. Later signings included The Archies, Josie + The Pussy Cats, Kevin Keller and Toni Topaz. By 2002, Archie Records was well on its way to becoming one of the most successful indies of the 21st century!
Merger king Jason Blossom set his sights on the label in the early 2010s. In 2014, he finalized a multi-million-dollar deal to add it to his vast catalog of music holdings. Not included in the deal was a subscription-only label, Archie Fan Club Records; artists who recorded for that specialty imprint owned their master tapes. Those releases are not listed here but AFC recording sessions are documented in DESTINATION: SUGARTOWN! Pop Culture Cantina's take on the Great American Rock 'n' Roll Song Book.
In June of 2013, Archie merged with Falcon Records, an historic Latin music label owned by Dilton Doiley Briseño. The labels maintained separate logos but post-merger, Dilton became executive producer of all Archie product, while Chuck Clayton served the same function for Falcon. Freelance producers D'Angelo Wong and Barclay Singh were onboarded at this time and given supervision over European and Asian releases, respectively. An international corporate structure was taking shape, but the company wouldn't survive to benefit from it! Freelancer Rod Mack became worldwide Chief of A & R in September of 2014, but his tenure lasted less than a year.
Per a legally-binding pact signed in 2005, the Colombia-based Discos Fuentes label retained the right to distribute Archie product in South America. This agreement will even hold after 2059, when India-based media giant Vox Sound + Image succeeds Republic as owner of the coveted Archie masters. However, by the 22nd century the Archie Records catalog will be fully owned, manufactured and distributed by The Walt Disney Company.

Savoy Sound was a Jazz vocal group founded by its music director, Justin Strickland. Trevor Smith discovered the group and convinced Archie to sign them to his label. Shortly afterward, the male lead singer quit and Trev was deputized to sub for him in the studio. Savoy Sound's Latin-flavored debut album Begin The Beguine sold reasonably well but reviews were lukewarm at best! By 2012, the group had broken up but not without leaving an impact: Trev married Christina Angel, the female lead singer, and Justin Strickland began arranging music for The Archies on a regular basis.

Archie's first solo album was a critical success but it sold poorly; Archies fans had trouble accepting their Rock idol in an Adult-Contemporary mode! Veronica, who named Burt Bacharach as her all-time favorite songwriter, felt that this was the best of all the albums released on Archie Records. Producer Bacharach spoke highly of it as well and looked forward to working with Archie again. Unfortunately, that never happened.

UNRELEASED 2010 EP
These tracks were meant for SOUL SUPREME, a sophomore Pussy Cats album on
Archie Records. The sessions were interrupted by a robbery in which a security guard was seriously injured! Concerned for the safety of his legendary clients, manager Lex Cabot called a halt to the project. The album was downsized to an EP, but Cabot nixed the release. Never on the best of terms with Archie, he decided to wait out the end of The Pussy Cats' contract. Their final recording for the label would be a single on which they collaborated with The Archies (see entries for 2012).

Riverdale's most popular Country music band Katz + The Fiddles were frequent sidemen on Archies sessions. In 2009, Archie convinced Katz Rockland to sign her band up with his label. The superb Honky-Tonk album that introduced them to a wider audience kicked up quite a stir in Nashville! While it didn't end up spinning much in the way of artist royalty coin, Nashville Katz generated a songwriter royalty windfall for members of The Archies. Music City stars lined up to cover the selections written by Archie, Betty, Veronica, Jughead and Kevin Keller, and half of those cover versions broke for smash hits! The Fiddles wound up bypassing Nashville for Las Vegas, where they became marquee headliners.

France was arguably the hardest market for Archie Records to crack! The only Archies releases that sold well there featured Jughead on lead vocals. Archie and Veronica asked Juggy to cut a solo album for the French market. A Punk Rock group was hired to back him in the studio, but proved unsuitable for the project; The Archies replaced them. Ironically, Juggy's French-language releases ended up being successful in every French-speaking territory except France! Issued on the Pathé label in Europe and on Capitol Records in Canada, they were never marketed in the United States but promo copies appeared on the Archie label. "Connaissez" is a French translation of "Made In Paris", the same song that Archie cut with Burt Bacharach earlier in the year; however, it's a completely different arrangement and production.

Hits Of The Sixties was Veronica's favorite Archies album. She was delighted when the legendary songwriting team of Barry Mann and Cynthia Weil approached her with the idea of recording their songbook. At the studio sessions, the opinionated duo clashed frequently with strong-willed Ralfi Chingas, but they achieved a creative synergy. The result was a smash-hit album that pleased both critics and fans. Despite its Platinum sales success, Archie and Veronica decided that it was time to part ways with the volatile Chingas! Two decades will pass before he works with The Archies again, but he logged two more productions for Archie Records: A musical cast recording and a debut album for Toni Topaz (see below).
THE 2117 ALBUM TITTY TWISTER WILL BE UNIQUE TO LATIN AMERICA. THE TITLE TRACK, A PREVIOUSLY-UNRELEASED ARCHIE RECORDS MASTER, WILL BECOME THE ARCHIES' LAST NUMBER ONE SINGLE. THE REST OF THE LP CONTAINS ORIGINAL SONG DEMOS THAT GROUP MEMBERS RECORDED BETWEEN 2004 AND 2014.

Ralfi Chingas was executive producer for this belated single, which first appeared on the 2011 Pop Art! compilation. It features Melody Munro-Jones trading leads with Veronica and Betty. Most of the musical backing is performed by Alexandra's band, The Kooltyme Katts. Despite publicity that suggested otherwise, no other members of The Archies or The Pussy Cats took part in the recording session. The full Archies group does appear on an earlier version of "Stop!" that was recorded in 2004; Reggie sang lead.

This cast album was the first and only double-Platinum, double-length LP released by Archie Records. Kevin Keller put his Heavy Metal career on hold to co-star with Jughead in the London run of Soul + Inspiration. Written by Cynthia Weil and featuring several of the most iconic hit songs she wrote with husband Barry Mann, the show chronicled the history of '60s superstars The Righteous Brothers. Bill Medley, bass singer of the Pop duo, personally requested that Kelly portray his late partner Bobby Hatfield on stage. Future Reggae queen Toni Topaz rounded out the cast as Medley's lover, Darlene Love. (Toni became Juggy's second wife following his divorce from Betty Cooper.) Chuck Clayton played replacement Righteous Brother Jimmy Walker at the show's Riverdale debut, but in London British actor/singer Trevor Ansari took over the role. Ansari was later hired to be the main announcer for "Archie Radio".

Three of the last four new acts signed by Archie Records - Kevin Keller, Toni Topaz and Olguita + Reginald - went on to have stellar careers. (The one that didn't was The Vixens, whose single and scheduled album dates were cancelled.) When this début LP for the duet act he'd created with his wife Olga broke for a solid smash in Latin America, Reginald Whitney Mantle III knew he'd sung his last note with The Archies. Kevin Keller subbed for him on this album, billed as a "guest artist" although Kelly had long been an honorary group member. This was the only Archies LP that featured no sidemen. Archie, Betty, Veronica, Jughead, Kelly and Trevor played every note of Justin Strickland's challenging arrangements, and it was an amazing achievement given their limited experience with Jazz. In fact, Jump Back Honey! was hailed by critics as a masterpiece; The Archies had never before enjoyed such glowing reviews, and they won't again until belated appreciation manifests for their Atlantic Records LP Ride, Ride, Baby and the (very) posthumous release of their long-delayed ABBA-Normality album in 2114. However, just as Archie's fans were unwilling to explore the Bacharach sound with him, his group's fans failed to appreciate this daring foray into 1940s Blues, Boogie and Swing. The LP sold poorly everywhere but in Japan, where it hovered near the top of the charts for the better part of a year.

This album was only marketed in Latin America but it was heavily imported. A celebration of Sixties dance crazes recorded live in concert, Archie @ The Hollywood Bowl was the realization of an aborted solo album by Trevor Smith devoted to Sixties dance crazes. It's the second most popular Archies album among Spanish-speaking fans (the first being Éxitos en Español). Unreleased studio versions exist for every song but the Christmas medley, which was created just for the show. Members of The New Archies will show a particular fondness for this LP: Three of them, Rikki Ninja, Donna Dante and Ramsay Khalid Sharma will cover "Everything's Wrong", "Don't You Want My Lovin'" and "Picture Me Gone" respectively.

In September of 2005, Rod Mack helped Betty Jones record an EP that was never finished. Billy Sunshine would've been a tribute to Blue-Eyed Soul singer Evie Sands, and everyone involved with the project predicted a major hit. Nearly 15 years later, the hit finally happened, but with live-in-concert versions instead of studio tracks! Fittingly, Rod supervised these new renditions of Evie Sands hits. A two-sided smash culled from the group's much-praised Hollywood Bowl concert, this single was the only Archies 45 to feature Betty's lead vocals on both sides. Studio or live, "Angel Of The Morning" b/w "Picture Me Gone" was clearly Top Ten material; but Veronica chose to limit the release to South America.

Former Archies producer Ralfi Chingas was commissioned to work with Toni, and The Bettys (the reconstituted version of a band Betty Cooper led during her teens) provided her studio backing. This was the last of three live Archies 45s marketed in South America. Trevor Smith's sizzling take on a Peggy Lee classic sold well enough, but the main event was its flipside: An acoustic cover of the 1984 Jacksons hit, "State Of Shock." This tornado of a Habanera Rock track scored hella big in Buenos Aires Tango palaces; it will be a ballroom dance staple for years to come! The song was captured in 2010, onstage at the legendary Moulin Rouge in Paris; Veronica sang it bilingually as a duet with special guest Rod Mack. There's also an earlier version sung with Kevin Keller, an outtake from The Archies' 2003 Like A Rolling Stone sessions. "State Of Shock" was unquestionably one of Roni's best vocal performances, and the world finally got to hear it on the last Archies single produced for Archie Records.

Based on airplay alone, "Jim Dandy" and "Trapped In The Prison Of Love" became continental hits; neither of these Archie Records masters were ever released as singles.

This was The Archies' final album project for the Archie label. A Heavy Metal-flavored tribute to ABBA, its release was enjoined by Polar Music, publisher of the Swedish supergroup's hit songs. The ABBA organization took possession of the master, which will not be legally marketed for 100 years! However, that much-belated release will be a stone smash, selling more copies than any other Archies album except Éxitos en Español. Guest artists included pianist John Legend, percussionist Sheila E, cellist Yo Yo Ma, trumpeter Wynton Marsalis and guitarist Paul Sabu as well as future Archies members Kevin Keller and Toni Topaz. A cover of ABBA's "So Long" was planned for single release, but that recording was aborted; all that exists is an unfinished backing track. On the 2014 recording session log, album production was credited to VERONICA w/BLUE-EYED SOUL.

Golden Sugar was originally scheduled for release on Archie Records in 2015. Promo copies exist on gold vinyl but it will be withheld from the market for ten years! Archie, Veronica and Alan Mayberry sold their label to Jason Blossom in 2014. The notorious corporate raider cancelled all new releases and decided to sit on the catalog for a decade. All the while, he'll be secretly bootlegging Archies masters! The group will file several unsuccessful lawsuits against him. Legal disputes won't be settled until Blossom falls victim to a sensational murder in the year 2029. Afterwards, Archie and Veronica will come to terms with the new owners of Republic International. This clears the way for legitimate reissues from the Archie Records catalog. The Archies will reunite in 2030, sign with Colombia's Discos Fuentes label and record a smash hit three-record studio set, The Grass Will Sing For You.
