To the folks at Archie Comics, The Archies have never been much more than a promotional gimmick! To the staff of Pop Culture Cantina, they are Pop Art icons and flagship artists for a fabulous, imaginary indie record label. Archie Records was founded in the year 2000 by Archie Andrews, his wife Veronica Lodge-Andrews and their good friend, sound engineer Alan Mayberry. The Archies became the main act, eventually logging over twenty single releases and eleven albums.

Artist & Repertoire for Archie Records was mostly handled by Chuck Clayton, Alan Mayberry and Latin music veterans Ralfi Chingas and Dilton Doiley BriseƱo. Laura Pinto, Veronica, Sabrina "Bree" Spellman and Alan M's ex-wife, Alexandra Cabot-Mayberry would produce masters for the label, too. In the year 2030, Alexandra will become CEO of Republic USA, a company founded by Jason Blossom that will play an important part in Archie Records' future.

All artist releases appeared on the Archie label except those by Reginald (Reggie "Gino" Mantle of The Archies) which carried the Cherry Vagina logo; Bingo (Jughead's cousin), which were recorded for Discos Chismosa; Josie, who had a solitary release on the Triumph label; Katz + The Fiddles, who appeared on the Archie Americana subsidiary; and Olguita + Reginald, marketed under the Falcon Records imprint. (Kevin Keller became a Falcon artist after switching over from the parent label.) Product marketed in Europe was sold by Disques PathƩ, Asian releases appeared on Liberty Records and the Capitol label covered Canada.

RELEASED FEBRUARY 2001

This single was withdrawn from sale after Big Ethel Mason became a born-again Christian and abandoned her Gangsta Rap music career. In the year 2004, Archie will hire Ethel as his executive secretary. Her office assistants, friends from Riverdale, will morph into a background vocal group known as The Vixens.

RELEASED AUGUST 2001

The first Archie Records album production released was produced for another label! Specifically, Disques PathĆ©, Archie's sister label in Europe.  CEO Claude Canaille urged Archie and Veronica to record a "no talent" singer he'd been pressured to sign.  Suspecting that his evaluation of Harris Gardner was wrong, they flew him to Mamaroneck, put him in the studio with arranger Sabrina "Bree" Spellman and discovered an old-fashioned ballad belter that PathĆ© executives had nearly let slip through their fingers.  Sensing how uncomfortable Harris was singing in English, producer Alexandra Cabot-Mayberry let him cut a superb French-language album that Canaille was eager to release.  Since Chansons D'Amour was never marketed in the United States, Archie only earned production royalties from it.  Future productions for sister labels would be done under a profit-sharing agreement.  Harris Gardner soon returned to France, but during his stateside recording sessions he and Sabrina enjoyed a brief but intense romance.

2001 DEMOS

This may be the most famous Archie album of all, but it isn't an album master and it was never issued on the Archie label!  The LP that will eventually appear under the title So Much Love began as a collection of demo recordings, arranged and conducted by Carole King. Finished masters would have been produced by Carole's daughter, Louise Goffin, but the planned album was abandoned.  Tracking didn’t advance past the demo stage. In the year 2025, Republic International CEO Jason Blossom will secretly (and profitably) bootleg these demos. The Archies will record overdubs in 2030, resulting in a belated album master and the demos themselves will be marketed that same year; but a legitimate LP release will not come until 2127!

Ralfi Chingas replaced Louise Goffin as The Archies' new producer.  The Cuba-born-Puerto Rico-raised Chingas hailed from a Salsa background, but he urged the group to cultivate a rural fan base.  The result was this double-length Country/Pop collection.  It became the first Archies album to win a Platinum sales award!

COMPACT DISCS WERE ANATHEMA TO THE FOUNDERS OF ARCHIE RECORDS! THEY FOUND THE FORMAT AESTHETICALLY REPUGNANT AND AURALLY INFERIOR TO VINYL. ARCHIE RELEASES WERE MARKETED EXCLUSIVELY IN LP AND DOWNLOAD FORMATS. THE FOUNDERS DARED TO BUCK MUSIC INDUSTRY NORMS AND CONSISTENTLY SCORED GOLD AND PLATINUM SALES.

Archie and Veronica sought and received permission from Mick Jagger to cut this double-length tribute to the world's greatest Rock 'n' Roll band.  In the year 2092, the album master for Like A Rolling Stone will be destroyed! The culprit is a vengeful tape librarian who believes that The Archies "desecrated" Rolling Stones' music! By 2096, session tapes for the album will have mysteriously disappeared; only the single and EP masters will survive. In the year 2115, a reissue will be attempted using these elements and second-generation foreign masters but it won't be released.

This cast album was recorded to launch Dollywood Records, an Archie subsidiary label that unfortunately never got off the ground! It was pressed in very limited quantities.

UNRELEASED 2005 ALBUM

The Archies cut their Toni Wine tribute during the Spring of 2005. The session tapes were sabotaged by a disgruntled sound engineer, and an album master was never made.  However, a preliminary album mix survives on vinyl acetate. That recording will make possible a much-belated LP release in the year 2098.

Inexplicably, all of the vocal tracks went missing from this album master! Even so, it will serve as the basis of a smash-hit Disco remix over a century from now. The Evangelista Sisters (Aqua Vulva, Flame and Sugar Walls) only stayed with Archie Records long enough to record this unreleased LP. Dilton Doiley BriseƱo and Rod Mack both worked on it but in different studios and at different times.  The future life partners won't actually meet face-to-face until the year 2031!

The Archies' tribute to writer/producer/performer Ron Dante pulled disappointing sales, mainly because the group didn't promote it.  Veronica and Juggy's extramarital affair came to light during the sessions, leaving the group's future in doubt.  Amid rumors of a break-up, the members kept distance from each other during much of 2006. The London recording sessions were actually abandoned, leaving Reggie Mantle, Ron Dante, sound engineer Alan M and The Archies' manager Big Nipsy to complete the album in Mamaroneck.  Fortunately, The Archies were able to reconcile and reunite in early 2007.

This was a solo single by Reggie Mantle. Gino loved to push the envelope, so this murder ballad with a bisexual twist was right up his alley.  Everyone agreed on the hit potential of "Eunice Danvers", but its subject matter proved to be a bit too potent for Country music radio!  Veronica and Kevin Keller penned the controversial A-side, and Jughead and Betty wrote the flipside, which also had sexually provocative lyrics.

RELEASED JULY 2008

When Dilton Doiley BriseƱo approached Archie with a new Tejano-flavored arrangement for "Sugar, Sugar", Arch booked a New Orleans recording session immediately.  "Sugar Sugar en EspaƱol" became an across-the-board smash in Spanish-speaking countries!  This prompted The Archies to cut an entire Latin album with bilingual lyrics.  Although the two-record set ¡Ć‰xitos En EspaƱol! logged decent sales in North America, it topped charts internationally.  In time, it will become the biggest-selling LP ever released on the Archie label.  Reggie Mantle only appeared on the single; in 2008, he was temporarily suspended from the group.  At the Santa Barbara album sessions, Reg's bass chair was filled by session musician Trevor Santiago, who also contributed Spanish song lyrics.

In 2008, Archie succeeded in luring his favorite group, Josie + The Pussy Cats away from a major label. Since the 1980s, the iconic all-girl band had been touring and recording exclusively in Europe. During this time, they'd morphed from an old-school Soul group to a Punk Rock trio. With Archie and one-time Pussy Cats songwriter Alexandra Cabot-Mayberry overseeing production, Josie, Melody and Valerie returned to their Rhythm + Blues roots. Their blockbuster Soul Galore album won a Platinum sales award and launched the ladies on a successful comeback tour of the United States.

Ain't Nothin' Like A Heartbreaker/Bullets For Breakfast
Reginald
Produced by RALFI CHINGAS
RELEASED SEPTEMBER 2008

By the fall of 2008, Archie regretted his decision to oust Gino from The Archies, but the damage had been done. Even if this catchy Honky-Tonk two-sider had broken for a hit, a reconciliation was highly unlikely!  At any rate, Gino had already cut a solo album for another label and had no interest in promoting an Archie Records single. "Ain't Nothin' Like A Heartbreaker" was a rare songwriting collaboration between Archie, Betty, Veronica and Jughead.

EARLY ON, ARCHIE RECORDS PLANNED TO MARKET 45 RPM VINYL WORLDWIDE.  THAT PLAN WAS ABANDONED, AND VINYL SINGLES WERE ONLY SOLD COMMERCIALLY IN AUSTRALIA. HOWEVER, LIMITED-EDITION PROMOTIONAL VINYL WAS MANUFACTURED FROM THE START; THIS CHART SHOWS HOW THE PROMO LABEL DESIGNS CHANGED OVER TIME.

Discos Chismosa was Archie Records' first attempt
to create a Latin music subsidiary. Its first and
ultimately only artist was Jughead's half-
Puerto Rican cousin Bingo Wilkin, and Bingo's
dĆ©but single was a Spanish-language remake
of "Makin' It!", the 1979 David Naughton hit. Bingo
led the Archie Records house band, but instead of
his regular musicians, he requested that The
Archies back him on his first recording. While
"¡DĆ”melo!" never charted in the USA, the disc
scored a sizable hit throughout the Caribbean.
Touring to promote his single, Bingo got involved
in several embarrassing incidents with groupies; the
stability of his marriage was threatened! When
his album sold poorly, he decided to shelve his
star dreams, stay close to his wife and continue
making a comfortable living behind the scenes
as a session musician.

A single-disc concept of The Archies' second Country album, with all songs set to Cajun music arrangements. Veronica didn't think it sounded commercial enough, so the band shelved these tracks. Regrouping in New Orleans, they came up with a more Rock-oriented, double-album concept.

The Return to Archie Country album is actually a compilation made up of leftover Ralfi Chingas-produced tracks from 2002 and new recordings supervised by Dilton Doiley BriseƱo. (Much to Dilton's displeasure, some copies omitted his production credit!)  Holding forth with a harder Rock sound than its stylistic predecessor Archie Country, this double-length release became the first Archies album in five years to achieve Platinum status.  It was also the first to officially feature six group members: Trevor Santiago (brother of Josie + The Pussy Cats' Valerie Smith) joined the band in 2009, replacing Reggie Mantle on bass. Going forward, he was known as Trevor Smith. In turn, Reggie replaced Veronica on keyboards, and Roni assumed lead guitar duties.  From this point forward, Archie played rhythm guitar.  In yet another first, this album features the premier
duet recordings of Olguita and Reginald.

He's So Easy To Love/What Love Has Joined Together
Josie
Arranged by KEVIN KELLER
Produced by ROD MACK
RELEASED OCTOBER 2009

Triumph Records was set up as a custom label for
Josie + The Pussy Cats. This was supposed to be
a Pussy Cats single, but after hearing Josie's
demo Archie was anxious to get the song on
the market. He released the demo as the
master recording, before Valerie + Melody
had a chance to add their parts. His haste
wasn't rewarded with a hit, but "What Love
Has Joined Together" proved to be a flipside
sleeping giant!  It belatedly topped the dance
charts in 2017 after rediscovery and reissue
by popular demand.  However, the Triumph
logo never appeared again, and Josie never
had another solo single.

RELEASED DECEMBER 2009

By far, ARCHIE IN JAPAN was Archie Records' biggest selling release in Asia, mainly due to the runaway continental success of "Precious And Few."  Jughead's superb lead vocals made this remake of a Soft Rock oldie a firm favorite of The Archies' many Japanese fans!  A massive future hit lay in waiting on the EP: Sung in English, "St. Kevin Apostrophe" will belatedly top the charts in the 22nd century.
