Archie On Tour!
DC Hampton Jacobs presents
the Pop Culture Cantina History of
The Archies

Get ready for a history of The Archies that you've never heard before . . . something we specialize in here at Pop Culture Cantina!  In 1987, Archer St. Christopher "Archie" Andrews, Forsythe Jerome "Juggy" Jones and Reginald Whitney "Reggie" Mantle III formed a Punk-a-Billy trio in their hometown of Riverdale USA.  Originally known as The Juggz, they began to draw a following after changing their name to The Archies.  By the end of 1988, Mary Elizabeth "Betty" Cooper and Veronica Yvette "Roni" Lodge had joined the teenage group.   That same year, Roni's father arranged for them to begin recording for Kirshner Records. Under the supervision of producers Jeff Barry and Ron Dante, as well as executive producer Don Kirshner, they quickly evolved into a solid Pop/Rock performing unit.

Between 1988 and 1990, The Archies bagged a clutch of hit singles. These included "Bang-Shang-A-Lang", "Jingle Jangle", "Who's Your Baby?" and the legendary international chart-topper "Sugar, Sugar". However, by 1991 their working relationship with Mr. Kirshner had deteriorated to the breaking point! They found his directives overbearing and demanded creative control over their recordings.  When it wasn't forthcoming, the group decided to disband.  The members attended college, started families and (except for bass player Reggie) pursued non-musical careers. Guitarist Archie married up keyboard player Roni, and drummer Juggy wed percussionist Betty.

ROCKIN' & ROLLIN' AROUND THE WORLD

FANNY GABRIEL, JINX PONDEROSA AND SHERMAN SHASTA:
AGENTS WHO BOOKED THE ARCHIES AND THEIR
FABULOUS MUSIC INTO MAJOR CONCERT VENUES
ALL OVER THE WORLD

The September 11 terrorist attacks in 2001 brought The Archies back together. After playing benefit concerts for 9/11 terror victims, the band officially reunited. It signed with Archie Records, an indie label co-founded by Archie, Veronica and sound engineer Alan Mayberry (who helped introduce the world to Josie + The Pussy Cats). Nicholas Freund, a well-connected (and maybe Mafia-affiliated?) manager was also part of their new game plan. Thanks in no small part to his industry connections and promotional savvy, the adult Archies racked up a string of Gold and Platinum albums and singles: "Lady Jane", "Nobody But You", "Let's Get It On Today!" , "Glitter And Gold", "Hip Shaker", "Soul Deep Ska" and others.  (These are all real songs, BTW!)  While the band scored no Number One records in the USA between 2002 and 2014, their overall success far outstripped what they'd achieved in the late 1980s.

It might surprise people to know that this incarnation of The Archies only mounted six concert tours!  That number doesn't include USO tours, which the group took part in on a regular basis.  The Archies were entertaining American troops as early as 1990, and by the year 2014 they'd joined fourteen USO caravans; but there were two North-American tours in the early Thousands, and two World tours in the early Tens. The others were mini-tours of South America, Spain and Portugal, mounted in 2005 and 2008, respectively.

HOTS STAGE SETUP

STAGE SET-UP FOR THE ARCHIES' HOTS
WORLD TOUR OF 2011

The paucity of live concerts has a simple explanation: Most of the group members didn't want to tour. Being in a Rock band was only ever a part-time proposition for them. As teenagers, The Archies were full-time high school students. As grown-ups, Archie, Roni, Juggy and Betty were all business owners, while Reggie and Trevor Smith (who joined the lineup in 2009) were in-demand session musicians. They had no intention of neglecting their "day jobs"!  In fact, ample time to pursue other activities was a key condition of the band's reformation.

That said, everyone had to adjust their schedule to accommodate the group's runaway success.  Reggie resented how The Archies monopolized his time, and in 2012, he was the first member to leave. Today, he and his wife Olga San Quentín are a popular duet act on the Tejano music circuit.  Archie is now a solo act.  Veronica is head of A & R at Republic International Music. Trevor is on his way to becoming one of the most powerful song publishers in the music trade; and Juggy runs a restaurant chain.  Betty divorced him in 2017, is now a cookbook author.  You'll recall that her 2018 re-marriage to (Bisexual) CNN journalist Anderson Cooper made headlines!  What?  You don't recall that?  Never mind . . .

The Archies went on indefinite hiatus back in 2014, but less than a decade from now they'll reform once again.  This third edition of the group replaces Reggie and Trevor with Antoinette "Toni" Topaz Braithwaite and Kevin Luther "Kelly" Keller.
Their recording and touring career will end in the year 2033 after scoring two back-to-back, chart-topping, triple-length albums!  Although they started out as a teenage novelty act, The Archies will depart the Pop scene as proven superstars.

HOT SWEET + LIVE, VOLS 2 + 3

ARCHIE RECORDS PLANNED THREE
VOLUMES
OF HOT, SWEET + LIVE!  THE FIRST WAS ISSUED IN LATE 2004.
A CENTURY WILL PASS BEFORE THE FOLLOW-UPS IN
THIS SERIES OF CONCERT RECORDINGS FINALLY
HIT THE MARKET

Scarce though they were, Archies tours were very popular.  In fact, the two World tours were some of the most successful of their day. Most successful of all will be their seventh and final tour:  A globe-trotting, 50-city round of farewell concerts in 2032!  However, the ¡Adiós Amigos! Tour falls outside the scope of this review. Here you'll find set lists for the six tours the band mounted during its 2002-12 heyday. Pop-Art-Chie artist Stuffed Animal provides full-color "photos" of The Archies on the road. They're taken from the 2011 Hits Of The Sixties Tour program, which would be highly collectible if it existed!

A note on instrumentation: The Pop Culture Cantina chose to disregard the "classic" Archies band lineup: Archie on guitar and lead vocals, Betty on tambourine, Roni on organ, etcetera.  All of the adult members play multiple instruments and all of them sing lead.  Both on stage and in the recording studio, they routinely switch roles; generally speaking, though, Archie and Roni kick "axe", Betty blows sax, Juggy jams on drums and percussion, Reggie rocks the keyboards, and Trevor Smith bears down on bass.  (Kevin Keller will replace Reggie and Toni Topaz will stand in for Trev on the Farewell World Tour.)  These alternative Archies have also been known to wield harmonicas, fiddles, banjos, accordions, trumpets and various other joyful noisemakers in concert!

Sometimes The Archies are augmented by brass sections (Big-Ass Brass), mariachi musicians (Mariachi Lowrider) or special guest artists like Chuck Clayton or Katz + The Fiddles, both on stage and in the studio.  Rarely do they employ background singers other than themselves when recording, but backing vocal groups are a staple of Archies concerts.  Their most frequent backing voices are Los Hermanos Cochinada, also known as The Cochinada Brothers.  This quartet of harmony specialists hails from Puerto Rico and are the nephews of Rey Cochino, Archie's favorite session trumpet player.

HOTS PROGRAM CENTERFOLD
CENTERFOLD FROM THE HOTS TOUR PROGRAM

On this tour, The Archies performed songs from a forthcoming
album of Toni Wine ballads that ended up not being released.
"The Toni Wine Medley", only ever performed in South America,
was actually not part of that album.  Reggie Mantle, who served
as touring music director, translated some of the song lyrics
into less-than-perfect Spanish; The Archies sang those
translations on stage.  Audiences didn't seem to mind
the grammatical errors, but neither those translations
nor those songs were ever performed in concert
again.

*Reggie Mantle's wife Olga San Quentín appeared with the band on a few dates.  Although Reggie took part in this tour, he was officially on leave from The Archies. Reg didn't become an active member again until 2011, and he would only stay in the group one more year.

**Trevor Smith was Reggie's replacement while he was on suspension. Trev joined the band permanently at tour's end.

***Early in the tour, "Country 2 The City" replaced a comedy skit featuring Country songs written by members of The Archies. The skit songs were "Titty Twister" (A. Andrews, F. Jones, E. Mason), "Down On The Spanish Side" (A. Andrews, D. Briseño) and "On A Wrong-Way Street To Love" (Betty + Juggy Jones). This segment got a very mixed reaction; music director Dilton Doiley Briseño soon convinced the band to drop it.
