ARCHIES RECORDING SESSIONS 5

Archie and Veronica, both of partial Italian
descent, longed to cut a record that celebrated
their heritage. If it all possible, they wanted
to do it with The Archies! Betty, Jughead, Reggie
and new member Trevor Smith were always game for
singing in other languages; it was just a question
of finding the right Italian songs. The group
members finally agreed on titles in late 2011.

Early the next year, after filming their HITS OF
THE SIXTIES TV special in Rome, The Archies stopped
over in Milan for recording sessions. Milanese
producer D'Angelo Wong, who'd supervised their
Italian-language hit single "Take A Letter,
Maria" was waiting with lots of song arrangement
ideas. Their former producer Ron Dante had
served as music director for the TV special
and he was set to co-produce the sessions;
however, a scheduling conflict forced him to leave after
just one day of recording. The Archies ended up
co-producing in his stead: They cut an album's
worth of vintage 1960s Italian Pop, and had a great
time with D'Angelo.

CHICO'S GIRL

Leaving Italy, The Archies flew to Studio City in
Hollywood where they had booked a sound stage. They
filmed a long-form video to promote their forthcoming
Italian releases. Raj Patel was on hand to direct,
fresh from shooting the clip for Kevin Keller's chart-
topping debut single "My Clone Sleeps Alone"! Fashion
guru Donatella Granito (Ron Dante's cousin) had created
costumes for their TV special, and the band called on her
designing talents again; but one of the outfits she sent
over from Rome was a shocker! It was nothing but an Italian
flag beret and twelve strategically-placed color bands.
"Where's the rest of it?" Jughead wanted to know. There
wasn't any more: The wearer would basically appear naked!

Always looking for ways to push the visual envelope,
Raj Patel decided to film someone dancing in this
provocative costume. The Archies hired Toni Topaz
(still a top dance teacher at this time) to choreograph
the video, and she immediately got to work creating
a special solo; but who was going to perform it? Toni herself,
maybe? Betty? Veronica? Nobody loved filming nude women
more than Raj, but for this video, dude had beefcake in mind.
"It's got to be a male," he insisted. "Fans today want to see
PICKLE on screen! Kevin Keller's naked dance for
'My Clone Sleeps Alone' is proof of that. What's more,
it's got to be a member of the group."

MI RICORDANO MARIA

Reggie Mantle, long known as "the daring one" was the
obvious candidate! However, back in 2008 he'd filmed
some sexually-explicit music videos for a solo album.
The results were disastrous: Critics bashed him, his album
got yanked off the market, and the famous songwriter it
paid tribute to (one Neil Diamond) sued him for defamation!
So it wasn't surprising when he begged off. Archie was game
(he'd appeared nude in an indie film), but Veronica quickly
nixed the idea: "You're a stank dancer, Archiekins! You'd
just embarrass me." As for Juggy, he was too self-conscious
about the size of his (huge) penis. It was Betty who suggested
Trevor Smith. "After Reggie, Trev is the best male dancer in
the group," she noted. Dude also happened to sing lead on
"Mambo Italiano", the number Raj wanted to synchronize to the
nude dance sequence.

TREV SMITH PORN STAR

The normally shy bass player wasn't as reticent as you
might expect: Trev had put himself through music school
working as an artist's figure model. Dancing on camera
scared him far more than nudity did, but Toni Topaz made
it easy for him: Babe created a dance routine that was
essentially a series of dramatic poses. Raj filmed them
in high contrast chiaroscuro light, enhancing the drama.
These nude scenes weren't as gratuitous as they'd been in
Kevin Keller's video, but there was definitely PICKLE
on display!

MAMBO ITALIANO VIDEO

When released in Europe, the video caused a sensation.
Predictably, the two minutes' worth of dance scenes nel
nudo went viral on the Web, but the public's response wasn't
only about that. Mambo Italiano oozed high style! Shot in
two-strip Technicolor, it had silent film production values
and resembled a German Expressionist movie short. What's
more, when Jughead channeled Rudolph Valentino singing
"Lei Mi Aspetta", Reggie burned up the screen with "Quando?
Quando? Quando?" and a super-sexy Betty vamped her way
through "Gloria", it was arguably just as memorable as Trevor's
full-frontal. Critics hailed the promo as "Raj Patel's artistic
triumph", and it won several international video awards.

MAMBO ITALIANO 2

Somehow, though, the records (two four-track EPs marketed
in Europe) didn't benefit from its popularity. Sales were
lukewarm at best, and a single version of "Mambo Italiano"
tanked on the Italian charts. Naturally, The Archies
weren't happy: They hadn't even wanted that song for the
single! But after Trevor's naked dance became THE promotional
image for their Italian releases, they had no choice. To a
Rolling Stone reporter, Archie and Veronica bemoaned letting
Raj film it. "It was just too sensational," Roni grumbled.
Arch agreed, wisecracking: "Trevor Junior and his twins
completely overshadowed our music!" When these quotes
got back to the video director, he was outraged; dude became
estranged from band and didn't work with them again for over
a decade! Yet when the Archies Fan Club combined the EPs for
North American release, the limited-edition eight-track set
was loaded with video stills. That 2013 Christmas offering
sold like hotcakes, compensating somewhat for the music's
failure in Italy. The complete MAMBO ITALIANO sessions are
documented below . . .

The Archies cut a tribute album to Barry Mann and Cynthia
Weil, arguably the most successful Pop songwriters of the
20th century. Music director and flamenco guitarist Jonniemae
Trouten was a discovery of Ralfi Chingas. "Chico's
Girl" went Top Ten in Mexico; Veronica sang lead.
The Archies hoped "Little Honda" would be the hit
follow-up to their Japanese smash "Precious And Few",
but the rare Jughead/Reggie duet recording failed
to catch on. It was also issued as a fan club
single flipside.

These early live performances were taped by Dilton
in 1987 and '88, when The Archies were still a
Punk-a-Billy trio. Dude used recording equipment of
his own invention to capture crystal-clear performances
of Archie, Jughead and Reggie at their rawest! The
tapes were stolen in 1989, but after the turn of the century,
some of them surfaced in the possession of King Records. The
Archie label sued to block the 2008 release of King's SAVAGE
YOUNG ARCHIES CD. Three years later, Archie and Veronica won
control of the lost tapes and released them on an Archies Fan
Club LP. SAVAGE is one of three wildly popular AFC albums
(the others are a karaoke LP, BE YOUR OWN ARCHIES,
and Chuck Clayton's solo album YOU'RE GONNA MISS ME).

string of English-language international smashes;
there will be no more until the 21st century!

"It's A Different World" was not a hit for The Archies.
"Twerk" was the group's entry in Italy's San Remo
Song Festival for the year 2011; Archie and Trevor sang a
rambunctious duet lead! Due to lyrics that both
Betty + Veronica considered sexist, the Archie
Andrews/Terry Tate/D'Angelo Wong composition
was only ever performed at the festival.

The pair of EPs that feature these tracks were
only available in Europe until late 2013. That
Christmas, the Archies Fan Club issued them to members.
Decades from now, a Vox compilation titled ARCHIE LOVES
MAMBO will combine LEI MI ASPETTA, MAMBO ITALIANO
and MI RICORDANO MARIA (The Archies' first Italian-
language EP) into a best-selling package. "Archie
Loves Mambo" is an Italian-language take on "Papa
Loves Mambo", the fondly-remembered Perry Como
smash from 1954. "Gloria" will be covered in English
by two New Archies members: Garcy Briseño (for an
unreleased single) and Ramsay Khalid Sharma (for
his first solo album). "Over And Over" is an updated
version of a song recorded by the Kirshner-era Archies;
Veronica and Terry "Pop" Tate wrote Italian lyrics
for this molto splendido Jeff Barry-Ron Dante
composition.

contains the nucleus of The Bettys: In 2014,
Jonniemae, Midge Mercury and Bree Spellman
will join Betty Jones' reformed Rock band.
Although "Suspicious Minds" was one of the
instrumentals tracked, The Archies never
recorded a studio version. They did consider cutting
the Elvis Presley classic several times, though,
and Betty will feature it live on the band's 2032

Fan Club release!  Copies found their way into the
hands of many non-members and became coveted
cult items.  Les Midgettes' Power Pop interpretations
of Archies hits are as easy to play as they are to sing,
and they'll end up influencing a generation of garage bands.

This was the first of two bi-coastal Archies record
dates. Betty, Veronica, Reggie and Trevor tracked
music and lead vocals in New Orleans while Juggy and
Kelly recorded backing vocals and instrumental overdubs
in Philadelphia. Archie did not attend these sessions,
but some of his pre-recorded guitar tracks were added
to the final mix. SHADOW DANCING had a very limited
shelf life! Only released in Asia, it was pulled off
the market when early sales fell flat. A 2099 compilation
titled ARCHIE IN NEW ORLEANS will give these
half-dozen Disco remakes (mostly sung by Betty +
Veronica) a much-deserved reissue. Contrary to rumors,
SHADOW DANCING was never going to be a Fan Club EP.

SOUL + INSPIRATION was a short-lived
musical based on the memoirs of Bill Medley,
a member of The Righteous Brothers. At Medley's
request, Jughead and Kevin Keller were first to star
in the leading roles. With a book by legendary song lyricist
Cynthia Weil, the show did SRO business in New England
during the Spring, Summer and Fall of 2012. In preparation
for transferring the production to London's West End,
the cast and crew traveled to the UK to play previews.
Terry "Pop" Tate was one of the pit musicians, and
Archie (who wrote arrangements for the show) booked
studio dates for him after curtain each night.
The band that backed Pop was arguably the best
that ever played on an Archies-related studio session!

reached the Top Forty in South Korea; Archie and
Veronica sang a duet lead.  An earlier version of "Look In My Eyes,
Maria" appears on Archie's 2010 solo album ARCHIE SINGS
BACHARACH. This was the last time Reggie Mantle would share
a recording studio with all of his bandmates; from this point forward,
he was essentially a solo artist.

These cast album recordings for SOUL + INSPIRATION,
the West End hit starring Jughead and Kevin Keller, were the
most expensive studio dates Archie Records ever mounted!
Five current or future members of The Archies (one of them
honorary) took part, justifying this log entry. "Stand By"
did not appear on the cast album; it was recorded for
and featured on a SOUL + INSPIRATION promotional EP.
The Cochinada Brothers are nephews of trumpet virtuoso Rey
Cochino. Nurmeen Saroyan and Juggy's sister Jelli Jones-
Torres were The Vixens in studio (sans Big Ethel), but
neither one of them appeared on stage. The London
production of SOUL featured a rotating pair of femme
background singers. Toni Topaz always provided
the third voice in that group.

These duet sessions are justifiably famous. Juggy and Kelly
laid down some of the finest Rock duet performances
ever recorded at Abbey Road! Sir Paul McCartney,
Sir Elton John, Rick Astley, Alison Moyet, Lulu,
Carlos + Cindy Santana and Sir Tom Jones were among
a host of music celebrities observing from the sound
booth at various times. The SOUL + INSPIRATION cast
album sold double-platinum, even though the show bombed
big when it reached Broadway: By then, other, inferior
singers had replaced Juggy, Kelly and Toni.

Chuck Clayton has been an honorary Archie since 1989.
When The Archies were teenagers, dude subbed for absent
members on stage. Chuck grew up to be an aspiring
Country singer/songwriter, and for years he struggled
for recognition in Nashville. Then Archie tapped him
for promotion director at Cherry Vagina Music, a job
he thrived in. By 2010, he was heavily involved in song
publishing activities and no longer pursuing a singing
career. Chuckii was so deep into an administrative bag,
he declined Big Ethel's offer to cut a record for the Archies
Fan Club; but Veronica wouldn't take "no" for an answer.
Babe even got Katz + The Fiddles to back him up in the studio.
Katz Rockland and the boys were more than happy to do it;
after all, Chuckii produced their 2010 debut album.

Ralfi Chingas. "A Little Bit Of Everything" became a
chart-topper in Sweden, sung by Betty in the native
language.

Archie and Trevor bring their Sam + Dave
performance style to these live tracks,
which were cut at Spanish Eddie's Bar +
Grill on May 3. Instead of in the recording
studio upstairs, they were captured
downstairs in the club. Complete with stomps,
screams and wolf whistles from the SRO crowd,
"Rock The Taste, Parts I + II" became the
opening and closing themes of Archie Radio;
this was an all-Archies satellite music channel
that aired for three months in late 2013.
The original tune, written by Archie, Dilton
Doiley Briseño and Bree Spellman was
only ever tracked live; it was the last fan
club single to be released.

"Oakie Boogie" and "Shoo, Shoo, Baby" were also
issued as a double A-side fan club single: Betty
led the uptempo number, and Veronica cooed the
sultry ballad. Unfortunately, JUMP BACK, HONEY!
was The Archies' biggest commercial flop since
1991's THIS IS LOVE. Despite abundant critical
praise, it only sold well in Japan.

GET ON BOARD LITTLE CHILDREN

SINGLES SESSION
(INSTRUMENTALS + VOCALS)
NOVEMBER 21, 2013

The underdub of "Precious And Few" was cut in
Japan in November 2009. Here was an excellent
ballad performance by Jughead coupled with
Veronica's solid interpretation of an obscure
Disco tune; but indecision over which side to
promote resulted in neither being released as
a single.

Belated final sessions for Chuck Clayton's Fan
Club LP. Katz + The Fiddles were unavailable,
so Veronica secured a more-than-adequate substitute
to complete the project! As a rule, The Archies
never played back-up for other artists, but they
gladly made an exception for their honorary member
(and they'll make another one in 2014). Even though
the band features on most of the album tracks,
they declined to take label credit. "We don't want
anybody calling this an Archies record," they agreed.
"It's Chuckii's time to shine!" Shine he did on 14
choice Connie Francis covers; Betty Jones adored
YOU'RE GONNA MISS ME, calling it "the Country album I
tried to make but never did." It outsold every other
AFC album except BE YOUR OWN ARCHIES. Long-delayed
stardom seemed to beckon, but "you're gonna miss me" really
was Chuckii's message to Nashville.  Dude chose to stay
on the publishing side of the music business.

DISCOGRAPHY PART FOUR

Great American Songbook selections by such legendary writers as
BARRY MANN, CYNTHIA WEIL, BRIAN WILSON, JERRY LEIBER,
MIKE STOLLER, NEIL DIAMOND, MADONNA, RON DANTE,
MICK JAGGER, KEITH RICHARDS, BARRY GIBB, SAM COOKE,
LEE HAZLEWOOD, CAROLE KING, BILL MEDLEY, DENNIS LAMBERT,
BRIAN POTTER, HOAGY CARMICHAEL, HADDA BROOKS,

In Part Five, The Archies lend a helping hand as Big Ethel spreads
her wings, pay unique homage to Sweden's biggest supergroup,
rock the house at a Hall of Fame induction ceremony, and once again
find themselves called to duty during a national crisis. Be there
when the group welcomes Kevin Keller as a full-fledged member and
cuts a final Number One single!
