ARCHIES RECORDING SESSIONS 3

When it comes to supporting characters, the Archie comic
strip has accumulated quite a crew since its debut in
December 1941. The Pop Culture Cantina's take on the
Archie universe boasts a rich supply, too, largely culled from
the official version of Riverdale USA. We've "remixed"
several longtime characters for our nefarious purposes!
Among the familiar faces you'll see are . . .

Raj Patel, now a successful video director with a secret side-
line: Filming sex tapes! Midge Mercury, one of the finest
female session drummers in the business. No longer involved
with Big Moose Mason, this Bisexual babe is playing the romantic
field. Alexandra Cabot-Mayberry, ex-wife of Alan Mayberry,
known for her work as a record producer; but in the future she'll be CEO
of Republic USA (a company that will buy out Archie Records) and
co-founder of the Riverdale Rock Festival. Meanwhile, Alan M
has come to terms with his Gay sexuality and is now partners with
Archie and Veronica in the Archie label. Dude also happens to be
a fantastic sound engineer!

ROGUES GALLERY

Sir Ambrose Nixon is the half-Trinidadian, knighted British cousin
of Sabrina, your favorite teenage witch. A successful theatre director,
he'll play an important role in the fortunes of The New Archies.
Sabrina has grown up to be Bree Spellman, successful record
producer, future founder of the New Archies and the Riverdale
Rock Festival and proprietor of Witch Queen Studios, possibly the coolest
recording studio in the world!

Formerly known as Jellybean, Anjelica "Jelli" Jones-Torres
is also grown up. A sometime member of Big Ethel's Vixens, babe has
married up a Reggaetòn musician. Josetta James, whom you'll
know as Josie, has become a Lesbian icon since her long-ago breakup
with Alan M; she is in Archie's world what Joan Jett is in reality:
A kick-ass bandleader and guitar goddess.

Dilton Doiley Briseno is probably our most important
supporting character, as well as the one who's changed the most.
We've re-imagined Dilt as a Blaxican (Afro-Mexican-American)
renaissance man who displays his genius in both the musical and
mathematics fields. Dude co-produces several important
recording dates for The Archies, and his daughter Garcy will
become principal lead singer of The New Archies. Also
profoundly changed is former restaurateur Terry "Pop" Tate, an Italian-
Palestinian ex-restaurateur whose real surname is Ishmael.  He's now a
songwriter for Archie's publishing company as well as a popular session
musician.

Ditto for Chuck Clayton, whose Louisiana Creole heritage
we reveal along with his longtime domestic partnership with college
professor Geraldine Grundy! Last but not least, Big Ethel (whose
real name is Fawn Ethel Mason) serves as Archie's private
secretary until leaving him to pursue a Gospel music career. Did we
mention that babe's a former Gangsta rapper?  Not only that, she leads
The Vixens, her own backing vocals girl group! Ethel's hubby is
pro-wrestler-turned-evangelist Algernon Marmaduke
"Moose" Mason.  Moose doesn't approve of his wife's
involvement with "the Devil's music", and she turns to Gospel
at his urging.

THE GRANDSON

We toss these refurbished comic strip stalwarts into a tasty character
salad that includes funny paper folks created especially for our stories:
Producer Ralfi Chingas, remix engineer and Gay bar owner "Spanish" Eddie
Roxchild, artist manager Big Nipsy Freund and others. A handful of flesh
-and-blood people are also in the mix, among them Laura
Pinto (our blog founder), Tom Mourgos, Bruce Frey and Jon
Trouten (the alter-ego of Transsexual guitarist Jonniemae)! Some of
these new characters are strong enough to spin off into their
own series. That's what happens to Ramsay Khalid
Sharma of The New Archies, who goes on to star in OEDIPUS
RAM. At some point, we will develop a series for our blog
mascot, Don Senorito Cartoon. Dude has a very
surprising connection to The Archies, and to
Veronica in particular!

Their Spanish remake of "Sugar, Sugar" was The Archies'
top-selling hit in the Spanish-speaking world! Archie and
Veronica sang a duet lead. The "Flamenco Rock Medley"
contains Spanish translations of two 1960s Pop hits:
"Timothy", sung by Reggie, and "I'm Your Venus" featuring
Betty's lead voice. Misfiled and believed lost for many
years, the master will be located in the late 2090s.
When finally issued on a dance EP in 2111, it
will score a sizable hit.

These tracks date from July 2003 and were recorded live
at Patrick AFB Beach House in Florida. Most were telecast
on an Independence Day cable TV special. While the
concert was very well-received (it has achieved
legendary status over the years), ratings were dismal!
Archie Records serviced Armed Forces Radio with an eight-
track promotional EP, and no thought was given to a
soundtrack album. That didn't change until five years
later, when delighted Archies Fan Club members were
offered a limited-edition 2LP set for Christmas. As
a concert document, many fans consider US OF ARCHIE
superior to the band's 2004 HOT, SWEET + LIVE album.
In the year 2038, The New Archies will cover "Bad
Moon Rising" and "Green River" for their debut album.

Chuck Clayton's little brother Corky will become
a member of Jozetta, the successor band to Josie +
The Pussy Cats. Dude makes his debut as a sideman at
these sessions. BEAUTIFUL STRANGER was scheduled to
be the debut release on Archie Americana Records,
and test pressings exist on that label. However,
the recording sessions were combative (by November,
the ladies were tracking their parts separately)!
When Betty refused to make any promotional
appearances with Veronica, Archie wanted to
scrap the whole project. Fortunately, Big Ethel
convinced him to release it as a Fan Club album,
and that's why the sessions are logged here.
Had it gained a wider release, this Madonna
song tribute would probably have been a
best-seller.

they changed their minds and cancelled it.

appear in both EP and LP format.

These were split sessions for Archies and Jughead solo tracks.
All were targeted at the French market, which Archie Records
had even more difficulty penetrating than the United Kingdom!
Juggy's recordings are all original tunes with French lyrics
written by Bree Spellman (AKA Sabrina). Originally, the group
was not contracted to back Jug on his solo album; at the last
minute, he drafted them in to replace French session players that
couldn't produce the sound he wanted.  Marseilles band
Plastic Salopard (for which Simone Salopard was lead singer)
later scored a major hit with "Fire!" using Archie's
arrangement. This resulted in The Archies' version being
shelved. Reggie did not attend this session.

More French-language split sessions for Jughead
and The Archies; Reggie was again absent from
the proceedings. Juggy's "solo" recordings hit
the market in early 2011. Sales and airplay in
France were negligible, but his second album
(the first was for another label) found an avid
audience on the international Gay dance club circuit.
What's more, Jug's French version of "Made In Paris"
was a smash in French-speaking Canada. (Earlier in
the year, Archie had released an unsuccessful English-
language solo version.) "Mister Twister", led by
Betty, was featured in a French TV special.

Few previously-unreleased tracks by the
teenage Archies band will ever surface.
One exception is SONGS FROM THE GIANT
JUKEBOX, a selection of concert segments
taken from the 1990 "Archie's Funhouse"
cartoon series. This album was exclusively
available to Archies Fan Club members, and
among its fifteen live cuts was a never-
telecast medley of Dave Clark Five hits.
Fondly recalled by studio audience members,
they were the only ones who heard it at the
time! In the year 2086, catalog A & R producer
Hepzibah Baumgartner will deconstruct the
medley and create four distinct song
performances. These "new" recordings will
subsequently feature on END OF A CENTURY,
The Archies' 100th anniversary album.

DISCOGRAPHY PART THREE

This third part of Archie's Studio Sessionography includes

In Part Four, The Archies cut a fabulous celebration of 1960s
Pop/Rock, revisit their early incarnation as a Punk-a-Billy band,
collaborate on a hit single with Josie + The Pussy Cats, become
karaoke icons, take an aborted stab at Saturday Night Fever-era
Disco, secretly back up an old friend on his debut album, and get
politically incorrect at Italy's San Remo Song Festival! They're
gonna f*cking rock the taste from your mouth!
